LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Let’s leave our masks on just a bit longer

While many are elated that they are no longer required by law to wear masks, I think this is the worst time for our government to announce this easing of safety regulations.

Firstly, I was very concerned when Health Minister Joe Phaahla said ‘masks off’. We are in the middle of winter and I don’t think that the Covid-19 virus has completely exited our lives.
While many are elated that they are no longer required by law to wear masks, I think this is the worst time for our government to announce this easing of safety regulations. As said above, we are in the middle of winter when the flu virus is on the rise. People should not be naive and think it is okay to throw away their masks just so they can show their faces and breathe easily again. I think, as South Africans, we should still take precautionary measures by having our masks handy until winter is over.
We should also still keep away from crowded places and keep our masks on when going to events.
Secondly, just yesterday we were told about the first Monkey Pox case and as much as we are still confused about the symptoms and prevention, I think it would be a good idea to keep to the Covid-19 regulations until we are sure of what we are dealing with as a country.
