Political party holds soccer tournament for Youth Day

"June is Youth Month so, as ActionSA, we took the responsibility to ensure that young people don't feel neglected. We used this soccer tournament as ‘udobo’ - something to attract them.

ActionSA commemorated Youth Day by holding a KZN youth soccer tournament at the Schaba’s sports ground on Thursday.

ActionSA KwaZulu-Natal provincial chairperson Musa Kubheka said that, “June is Youth Month so, as ActionSA, we took the responsibility to ensure that young people don’t feel neglected. We used this soccer tournament as ‘udobo’ – something to attract them. Then, when we were together, we discussed issues they experience as young people. We all know that young people at the moment are suffering because there is no employment and there are a lot of graduates who are sitting at home because there is no work. So we took it upon ourselves to especially visit places like rural areas, as most people know ActionSA as an urban organisation. This was our opportunity to explore and to show people that we are available even in rural areas and townships. This event was aimed at shifting our youth from negativity to positivity, and to give them hope.’’

Four teams participated in the tournament, namely Manchester United, FC Gofifi, Killers FC and Filidi United. The first game was between FC Gofifi and Killers FC, with the former winning the game 4-1. The second match saw Manchester United taking on Filidi United, ending in a 0-0 draw. Manchester also played against Killers FC and won that encounter 2-0. The final was between Manchester United and FC Gofifi. Manchester rose to the occasion to emerge victorious with a score of 2-0.

“The youth face huge challenges and most of these challenges are because our current government doesn’t care about the needs of our people. This leads young people to have negative attitudes, thoughts and ideas. Therefore, as ActionSA, we decided to host this soccer tournament in order to shift the youth from negativity to positivity. It is extremely important to nudge the youth in the right direction to ensure that their future is bright. I would like to thank our Constituency Leadership team for going the extra mile to ensure the success of our event. Also thanks to each and every one who contributed and supported this wonderful event. Your work will not go unnoticed,’’ said ActionSA Zululand regional media & information officer Sandile Gumbi.
