Learners excel at Curro writing competition

Kiran Hatting and Shiloh Uys earned a bronze certificate and gold certificate respectively.

St Dominics Newcastle has expressed pride in two of its Afrikaans learners, who achieve well in the annual Inter-Curro writing competition.

Kiran Hatting, in Grade 4, wrote a paragraph about his first day. He came third overall and received a bronze certificate. Shiloh Uys, in Grade 6, wrote a story about a picture. She came first overall and received a gold certificate.

My eerste dag in graad 4

‘My eerste dag in graad 4 was baie lekker. Ek het dit baie geniet. Ek het al my onderwysers en onderwyserese hulle is baie vriendlik. Meste van my beste maats is in my klass. One het ons sluitkas gekry. My gunsteling vak is Natuur Wetenskap. Ons register onderwyser is meneer Eliot. Ek het hokkie en aanlyn sport’.

‘Ek voel die water wat teen my wang af drup, die voëls wat so raak en die reuk van die mos maak my eintlik naar. Ek voel die son teen my lyf skyn. Die suikerbekkie wat altyd teen my venster sit, hoor ek sy pragtige stemetjie. Ek spits my ore en maak my oë oop en sowaar daar sit hy met sy lowergroen lyf, en sy gespikelde rooi kolle met sy blou oë was soos sneeu lyk. Na ‘n rukkie toe ek rond loop begin als dof te raak, ek probeeraan ‘n boom raak maar my hand gaan deur. Ek maak my oë styf toe en weer oop. Daar lê ek op my bed en slap, die suikerbekkie sit langs my venster, die sweet wat op die grond lê. Na die netball wedstryd was ek regtig uitgeput.’
