“It’s just so hard work” Estcourt Hospital employee speaks out about water crisis

The hospital had has irregular water supply for almost two weeks

It’s been another day with erratic water supply at Estcourt Hospital as more interruptions continue to plague areas in and around Estcourt.

A healthcare worker from the hospital told the Estcourt News that it has been almost two weeks since the institution ran out of water.

“It makes it very, very hard when it comes to delivering or rendering services to the patients because some of the machines we use need water to operate. Also bear in mind that this facility is a health facility, so cleanliness and a sterile environment should be always on top point,” said Michael Dlamini.

‘The worse day’

Mr Dlamini said that the water disruption had also caused havoc with routine at Estcourt Hospital.

“Most of all, we have a kitchen that needs more water to prepare meals for patients so they can have their medication. Monday (June 20) was the worse day because patients had their breakfast late,” he said.

Working without water, Mr Dlamini describes, is “hard”.

He, like the staff and patients, were glad to see local relief organisations, the Gift of the Givers and the Al-Imdaad Foundation providing water for the hospital and patient’s personal use yesterday (June 21) and today (June 22).

Gift of the Givers delivers water to Estcourt Hospital.

The Al-Imdaad Foundation fills up the reservoir at the hospital.

Sabotage

Allegations of more ‘sabotage’ have been relayed to community members on a social media group, with claims that water lines were repaired yesterday and then deliberately damaged overnight, causing the water disruption at the hospital today.

Water service provider uThukela District Municipality is remaining tight-lipped about the current ‘water crisis’ and its communications unit is not responding to any questions from the Estcourt News.

Similarly the Health Department has also not released any official comment about the current water disruptions at Estcourt Hospital.
