Weapons cache seized in Weenen

24 firearms and a range of ammunition were recovered

A host of ammunition and 24 firearms were recovered during a multi-disciplinary operation held in Weenen on Monday (June 20).

Police officers began their raid during the early hours of the morning in the Manqofini area.

“As the police were approaching the identified house, shots were fired towards them. They tactically entered the house and were able to disarm eight suspects,” explained police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo.

An extensive search of the house was done and a stash of weapons and drugs were found.

 

The recovered dagga.

“Police officers recovered a shotgun, two rifles, a revolver, four pistols and 90 rounds of ammunition. Police also found two explosive devices, a vehicle engine and dagga inside the house,” Constable Ngcobo elaborated.

In their quest to root out further illegal firearms and ammunition, police headed to the Sahlumbe area.

There, a rifle and 15 pistols were recovered.

The suspects fled before police arrived.

The eight arrested suspects, aged between 20 and 46, were detained at Weenen SAPS. They will appear in the Weenen Magistrate’s Court, facing charges of attempted murder, possession of dagga, unlawful possession of explosives, as well as unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
