Eight arrests after shoot-out with police

Officers swooped on a homestead, where they came under fire from heavily-armed suspects

Police conducted a multi-disciplinary operation in the Manqofini area of Weenen in the early hours of this morning (June 20). As the officers were approaching a homestead, shots were fired at them. They retaliated and entered the house, where they were able to disarm eight suspects.
 
During a search of the premises, police recovered a shotgun, two rifles, a revolver, four pistols and 90 rounds of ammunition. Two explosive devices, a vehicle’s engine and dagga was also found inside the house.
 
The team then headed to the Sahlumbe area, where a rifle and 15 pistols were recovered. The suspects fled before police arrived and managed to evade capture.

The eight suspects who were arrested in the Manqofini area are aged between 20 and 46.

They are set to appear in the Weenen Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (June 22), facing charges of attempted murder, possession of firearms and ammunition, possession of dagga, and unlawful possession of explosives.
