Suspects busted with guns and ammo

Uthukela District Crime Intelligence operatives were responsible for the bulk of the arrests and recoveries

An Intelligence-driven police operation netted four suspects last weekend.

A 19-year-old was arrested in the Brakfontein area of Ezakheni after being found in possession of a .303 rifle, two rounds of ammunition and an empty magazine for an assault rifle.

A 45-year-old was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning in the Tatane area of Amangwe. He was also found in possession of a .303 rifle.

A short while later, officers nabbed a 27-year-old in the Ngodini area of Amangwe. The man was found with a pistol and nine rounds of ammunition.

Before leaving, the officers arrested a 38-year-old man with a 9mm pistol and four rounds of ammunition in the Slimangamehlo area. Police then returned to Ezakheni, where they approached a premises in the mountainous area of Embizeni. A man fled upon seeing them approaching. A search of his premises turned up an AK-47 assault rifle and an empty magazine. 

The suspects appeared in court on Monday (June 13), facing charges of being in possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.

“Police in the Uthukela District will continue to employ strategies to avoid the proliferation of firearms,” said the district commander, General JB Khumalo.
