Valve tampering causes water cuts

The district municipality dismisses claims that valves tampering is being caused by disgruntled employees

A number of households have been hit by water interruptions over the past weeks.

While investigating the causes of these cuts, uThukela came across what appears to be a ‘sinister act’.

Communications manager Jabulani Mkhonza said that one of the causes of the water disruptions pointed to deliberate tampering with valves.

“Some people have deliberately closed the valves to achieve their goals. The worst affected communities include Mshayazafe, Ntabamhlophe, Wembezi and other areas. The water shortage has also affected Estcourt Hospital,” said Mkhonza.

Ageing infrastructure also places a burden on water provision, say uThukela.

“It was found that, due to ageing infrastructure, there were burst pipes that drained the reservoirs empty during the night,” Mkhonza added.

He strongly denied allegations that the tampering of valves was the work of disgruntled district municipality staff.

“At this point in time, we vehemently dismiss all allegations pointing at our employees, as alleged by some residents. We would like to put it on record that there are no issues of overtime between the employer and the employee. Overtime is pre-approved before the employee can be allowed to work,” Mkhonza explained.
