Running 52km to honour Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the marathon was postponed in 2020, but successfully managed to return in 2021.

The prestigious annual Prince Mangosuthu Ultra-Marathon took place on Sunday morning, kicking off at 05:30.
The marathon was organised by Biggarsberg Athletics Club, in partnership with uMzinyathi District Municipality (UDM), as well as Nquthu and Endumeni municipalities.
The key objective of the event is to contribute to the development and empowerment of communities in Nquthu, eNdumeni, uMvoti and uMsinga. It also aims to promote physical activity, sports, social cohesion and nation-building.
The race was attended by athletes from across South Africa and neighbouring countries such as Kenya, Lesotho, Botswana and Swaziland.
Held annually, this 52km marathon starts from the UDM offices and ends at Nquthu Stadium.
Over R450,000 worth of prizes were up for grabs, and Mayor Petros Ngubane made sure the prizes were ready on time to be handed out to the top-performing athletes.
The winner of the men’s race was Nsindiso Mphakathi from Underberg, while the female winner was Ntokozo Mkhize from Bulwer.
“This is a marathon to honour the veteran, His Excellency Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
“We began our involvement as a municipality in 2019. . Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the marathon was postponed in 2020, but successfully managed to return in 2021. The marathon has grown this year, as we have been able to attract athletes from Kenya and other countries,” said Mayor Ngubane.
