Hit-list horror has municipal workers fearing for their lives

The list contains 19 names of Endumeni workers and their occupations, causing widespread anxiety and distress.

A reputed ‘hit list’ circulating on social media has Endumeni municipal workers living in fear and even opening criminal cases.
The list contains 19 names of Endumeni workers and their occupations, causing widespread anxiety and distress.
Those whose names appear feel that the term ‘hit list’ could refer to being killed for criminal or political reasons.
The Courier can confirm that a police task team is currently investigating the matter. South African Municipal Workers Union chairperson Mr Ndlovu, whose name is also allegedly on the list, highlighted that, as a union, they had to involve the Local Labour Forum (LLF).
The LLF is a forum established at the workplace with equal representation from the employer and trade unions, as contemplated in the main collective agreement.
“As a union, we wrote to Endumeni Municipality to contact the LLF and we then presented our employer (Endumeni Municipality) with five recommendations, which they presented at a council meeting,” explained Ndlovu.
According to him, these recommendations were:
– For council to open cases with the local South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure the safety of those employees whose names appear on the list;
– For the municipality to approach the SAPS to conduct a threat risk assessment;
– For internal investigations to be conducted, since the ‘hit list’ seems to be targeting officials; and
– Lastly, as a precautionary measure, for workers whose name are on the list to work remotely.
The LLF adopted all of the union’s recommendations, as well as council. Workers have since opened criminal cases with Dundee SAPS.
