One arrested following foiled CIT heist in Tugela Ferry –

One suspect has been arrested and charged, following a foiled cash-in-transit (CIT) heist.

According to Ithemba Security’s Operational Manager, Mornè Potgieter, members of KwaZulu-Natal Crime Intelligence (Mdoc) received a tipoff about the heist, which was planned to take place in Tugela Ferry during the course of Monday (June 6).

Operational units responded immediately and followed up on the leads. Ithemba Tracing team members observed a white Volkswagen Polo… Three suspects got out of the vehicle and approached the G4S van on foot,” said Potgieter.

He added that the suspects then spotted the operational members and fled the scene. The suspects reportedly went to a safehouse and changed the number plates on the polo, before returning to Gauteng.

A registered KZN Crime Intelligence (Mdoc) source received information that one of the suspects would be passing through Newcastle at around 23:00 in a white Volkswagen Polo 8.”

Another operation was planned, with various units responding and implementing a tactical takedown plan. A close eye was also kept on the vehicle as it passed through Newcastle, added Potgieter.

Instructions were given, where operational units tactically boxed in the vehicle and did the takedown.”

One male suspect was arrested. An unlicensed 9mm pistol (with 15 rounds of live ammunition in the magazine) and two rounds of live ammunition were found in his possession.
