Questions asked about overturned municipal vehicle

It is assumed that the driver lost control of the vehicle and veered across the road

Questions are flying around after a crash on Friday night involving what is thought to be a municipal vehicle. Two males were travelling on the R33/34 bypass towards Lakeside Crossing when their vehicle overturned and careened 20 metres down an embankment. They were trapped in the single-cab bakkie. It is assumed that the driver lost control of the vehicle and veered across the road. The bakkie landed on its side and KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service had to carry out an ‘extrication’ to get the men out. According to information received by a trustworthy community source, it was a municipal vehicle. Further information also indicates that the driver was allegedly intoxicated and on duty when he crashed the bakkie. The two men were taken to hospital for medical attention.
KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service area manager Frikkie Bekker would like to extend his appreciation to the police officials who helped at the scene.
Ward Councillor Magda Viktor says the bakkie that was involved in the accident is one of the municipality’s most important vehicles. The bakkie is allegedly used at the water works plant during the day and at night in between water points. The passenger in the bakkie is assumed to be an EPWP worker and it is unclear as to why he was also in the vehicle.
The Vryheid Herald submitted an enquiry to AbaQulusi Local Municipality regarding the allegations and Municipal Manager Zwelihle Dhlamini responded as follows: “The municipality kindly notes the public interest / concern regarding the allegations that our employee was intoxicated when he was involved in an accident over the weekend. We hereby would like to inform the media that this is an internal matter and an internal investigation will be conducted accordingly.”
