Peaceful march held to fight gender-based violence

Ulundi Deputy Mayor Thembelihle Gaba Madela encouraged the community of Zondela to bring an end to violence against women and children

A peaceful march to spread awareness about gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide was recently held from Ulundi SAPS to Zondela location. The march was organised by the Ulundi Civic Society Organisation, in partnership with Ulundi Municipality and various government departments.

Ulundi Deputy Mayor Thembelihle Gaba Madela encouraged the community of Zondela to bring an end to violence against women and children. Speaking at the event, she said, ‘’It gives me joy to see that there are still people who will leave everything behind and come join a march to raise one voice that says ‘enough is enough’ when it comes to the killing of women and children. As Ulundi Municipality, we are here to lend our support. We grew up respecting women and treating every child like our own. We do not know or understand what is happening in this day and age. These incidents we see are not human behaviour; they are animal-like and cruel. We are standing up because, if we don’t, our nation will perish.”

The deputy mayor continued by referring to an incident that took place in Zondela location, where two girls were allegedly harmed by their mother’s boyfriend. “We went there as Ulundi Municipality to offer our condolences, support and other essentials that the family might need in preparation for the funeral. We do not want behaviour like this in our communities and we urge the government to deal with the perpetrators by handing out the punishment they deserve.”

The deputy mayor concluded by thanking Ulundi SAPS for working with communities in making sure they are protected and receive help whenever they report cases, and also for putting the perpetrators behind bars. ‘’As the municipality, we promise that we will do everything in our power to make people aware that we are saying ‘enough is enough’ with GBV.”
