KZN dam levels are ‘above average’

The Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam recorded a marginal decrease from last week's figures.

KZN dam levels are ‘above average’ –

KwaZulu-Natal dam levels are still steady after two consecutive weeks, according to the KZN Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS). In the department’s most recent report, dam levels were described as ‘above average’.

Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam saw a marginal decrease from 81.1% last week to 79.7% this week. The current average dam level in the province is 92%, compared to 73% around the same time last year.

In the report, DWS also noted that Hazelmere Dam declined significantly from 73.9% to 53.9% this week. The dam was said to have breached the 100% mark in mid-April due to heavy downpours, which led to flooding.

This prompted DWS and Umgeni Water to release water to prevent the dam wall – still under construction – from flooding the gallery through anchor cable recess openings in the spillway crest, which could have affected the dam’s stability,” said DWS spokesman, Sputnik Ratau.

Other dam levels in the province are as follows:

Driel Barrage – unchanged at 86.6%

Woodstock Dam – unchanged at 101.7%

Zaaihoek Dam – unchanged at 90.6%

Midmar Dam – unchanged at 100.6%

Albert Falls Dam – unchanged at 102.1%

Nagle Dam – unchanged at 101.9%

Spring Grove Dam – unchanged at 101.2%

Wagendrift Dam – down to 101.4% from 103.4%

Craigie Burn Dam – down from 101.3% to 100.7%

Mearns Dam – down from 125.5% to 110.7%

Pongolapoort Dam – down from 86.3% to 85.8%

Hluhluwe Dam – down from 83.8% to 83.1%.

Goedertrouw Dam – down from 100.3% to 100.2%

Klipfontein Dam – down from 101.3% to 100.7%

“Residents are urged to use water sparingly, and report water leaks and water infrastructure vandalism to local authorities,” concluded Ratau.
