Jovial Angus proves that disability is but a state of mind

Two years ago, weeks before the Covid-19-induced lockdown, Angus suffered a stroke that left one of his legs paralysed.

Shrugging off a debilitating stroke, jovial Angus Miller (66) has been competing in the SA Disability Bowls Tournament in Durban.
Playing from a walker and representing the Northern Sub-Region, Angus played in the singles and doubles sections along with 24 other disabled bowlers. He travelled down to Durban last Friday and has played daily.
In the doubles, his partner was Corrie Hughes of Richards Bay.
If he is selected, Angus stands a chance to travel to Australia next March to play for the SA Disabled Bowls Team in an international competition.
Angus says he has always been a keen sportsman and in his ‘younger days’ was a fearsome forward for Sentraal Rugby Club. He also proved to be no slouch on the hockey field.
In 2010, he took to bowls (“less chance of injury,” Angus laughed) and in 2016 won his first tournament in the Fours District Competition in Volksrust.
Two years ago, weeks before the Covid-19-induced lockdown, Angus suffered a stroke that left one of his legs paralysed. “It was a real shock – but with ongoing support from my family and many friends, especially those at Dundee Bowls Club – I managed to pull through by simply keeping up a positive attitude and a smile on my face.”
He was determined to get back on the bowling greens, which would also prove to be the ideal recovery therapy. At first, Angus played from a wheelchair, but regaining some strength and balance, he is now able to use a walker.
“I thank my family and my bowling friends for their unwavering support. It has been so unbelievable!”
