‘My Ideal Africa’ by Halalisani Shoba

“I am because you are”, without each other, we cannot be. You are my brother; I am your brother; so who is the foreigner among us?

As much as colonization tried to mess up with our identity but the fact remains that Africa is my land, our land. I’m proud to be an African. From Cape to Cairo, this is the land of milk and honey. Our land is beautiful, rich, and blessed with Africans ranging from different ethnic backgrounds, social, national origins, gender identities, and belief systems. They tried to divide us but in my ideal Africa, we are one. They tried to mess up our sense of belonging, but in Africa, it’s where we belong.

We don’t need to be told, how to dance, dress, sing and embrace each other because our DNA enables us to do that anytime, any day.

“I am because you are”, without each other, we cannot be. You are my brother; I am your brother; so who is the foreigner among us?

In my ideal Africa, there’s no room for conflicts, human trafficking, civil wars, poverty, racism, and classism! all we want is liberty, and equality and there is no excuse for laziness.

In Africa, we are rich, but we were made to believe that we need to be rescued from poverty, while our natural resources continue to develop Europe. Africa wake up, it is never too late. This is our land, but until we reclaim our identity, there’s nothing to celebrate, nothing to be proud of. What happened to the spirit of oneness? What will it take for the general Africans to unite and say, we are now ready to claim back our continent?
