Vryheid turn the tables to win ‘clash of the titans’

Vryheid eventually managed to win the game with only 14 players on the field after a yellow card for a dangerous tackle.

Two rival teams met on the rugby field on Saturday. The clash between Vryheid and Sentraal has been long awaited, but unfortunately only the two first teams had the opportunity to show off their prowess. Sentraal was the stronger team in the first 50 minutes. Vryheid’s defence was chaotic and their ball-handling skills appeared to be lacking on the day. Sentraal capitalised on Vryheid’s errors and scooped three interceptions to stamp their dominance on the field and put points on the board. They also dominated the scrums. After the first half, Sentraal was in the lead by 26 points to seven. In the second half, it took Vryheid another 10 minutes to find their rhythm and structure. Communication between the players improved, which saw them scoring much-needed points to get back into the game. Vryheid coach Jaco Maritz said that the tables were turned in the last 30 minutes when Sentraal’s play also seemed to descend into chaos.

Vryheid eventually managed to win the game with only 14 players on the field after a yellow card for a dangerous tackle. The final score was a super-close 33-31! Not only was it a win for the Vryheid boys, but it was also a fund-raiser for 17-year-old player Ettienne Roux who urgently needs a knee operation. In hindsight, it was an amazing day for both players and spectators. Vryheid versus Sentraal is always a ‘clash of the titans’. ‘Man of the Match’ awards went to Zakes Dlamini for the forwards and Luyanda Ndlangamandla for the backs.
