Students take to the streets in protest of fees

main issue behind the protest is finances, but added that there are other matters the students are also not happy with.

Mthashana students took to the streets once again on Thursday.
They gathered and marched to Mtshashana TVET College’s central office to hand over a memorandum outlining their grievances as students at the college.
The protesting students were seen singing and dancing outside the gate at the central office, Ntombikayise Maseko, who is a member of the SRC (Student Representative Council), mentioned that the main issue behind the protest is finances, but added that there are other matters the students are also not happy with.
Buhle Nzimande, who attended the protest on behalf of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) student command, said, “Discipline will take us where we want to go. I am here to pledge a message of support to all the students. We are saying that whatever you are crying for is valid. We know the things that are happening at this college. In this college, you suffer four times over. Firstly, you are a student but you do not have NSFAS. Secondly, once you have completed the course, you do not find in-service training. Thirdly, once you have found training for yourself, you do not get the stipend. And lastly, you try by all means to submit all required documents and you do not get your diploma. It is important for this college to take us seriously.’’
Maseko, who is also the president of Student Support Services (SSS), read the memorandum out loud, highlighted their grievances such as NSFAS issues, graduation, certificates, shortage of textbooks, communication channels, shortage of labs, Wi-Fi, student victimisation and other concerns.
The memorandum was received and signed by Student Support Services manager Mr Nkosi. Maseko concluded by saying that, “A meeting among the leadership will be held on Monday and from there, the students will know what to do.’’
