League tussle goes down to the wire

The hotly-contested Value City ‘Angler of the Year’ winners for all categories will be presented with their prizes at an awards function which will be held in the near future.

The NFWAA Devland Impuphu League Championship was a closely contested battle between Itec Freespool and Ladysmith angling clubs. Both teams won all their previous fixtures against the other clubs within the association.
This was Itec Freespool’s best chance of winning the coveted league title and Ladysmith’s opportunity to retain the title for a second successive season.
The teams were well represented and eager to finish the season on a high. Chelmsford and Riverside were drawn in A zone, Ladysmith and Itec Freespool in B zone, and Docrats and Endumeni in C zone. Eager anglers cautiously made their way to their favourite spots, as the road leading to the competition area is in a bad condition due to the recent rains.
Riverside and Chelmsford did not fare very well in their zone, accumulating a combined total of 65 points, with Chelmsford emerging as winners.
Docrats, on the other hand, had a‘field day’ against Endumeni, beating
them by a whopping 124 points to 58. The battle between the title contenders was evenly contested until the afternoon session, when Ladysmith seemed to have more regular bites than Itec Freespool
to eventually win by 122 points to 79.
Ladysmith proved their superior angling prowess on the day and throughout the season, and it was evident that other clubs will have to ‘up their game’ in the new season if they are to contend for the league title. The PRO of the NFWAA, Clifford Robson, congratulated Ladysmith
on winning the league and knock-out double for a second successive season.
Their anglers also won numerous heaviest fish prizes during the past
season and this trend was upheld by Kalvin Pillay, whose 3.224kg carp was the heaviest of the day. Itec Freespool’s juniors refused to be left out of the limelight and this time it was 13-yearold Jaydon Davids who caught the heaviest barbel, which tipped the scale at 4.155kg. Both Jaydon and Kalvin received Devland Impuphu vouchers worth R200 and a miniature trophy each.
