Striking AMSA workers interdicted by court

The Labour Court says any further strike action by AMSA workers will be deemed as unlawful.

Striking AMSA workers interdicted by court –

The Labour Court granted an interim interdict yesterday afternoon (May 11), in relation to reported strike action at ArcelorMittal South Africa’s Newcastle and Vanderbijlpark Works.

In a statement from Aprio Strategic Communications, on behalf of AMSA, it was stated that employees working at the blast furnaces, coke batteries and in steel-making were ‘not permitted to embark on or continue with a strike’.

This decision is said to be valid until the Labour Court makes judgement in the matter.

“Should these employees continue with the strike, it will be considered unlawful,” read the statement.

In another statement earlier this week, AMSA confirmed that the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) had issued a strike notice following a breakdown in the 2022 annual wage negotiations.

AMSA Chief Executive Officer, Kobus Verster commented that the timing of the strike suggested the revised offer on the table had not been shared with NUMSA members by union representatives.

We believe the company’s offer is fair and takes into account both the current economic conditions and the future sustainability of the business.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
