Food wastage stops here

Young learners put their classroom lesson into practice and cooked a delicious soup

Being mindful of food wastage is a trait that everyone should take seriously.

This was the topic for the day at Riverdale Primary School on April 28.

Led by Deborah Gamede, members of the Girl Guides, Brownies, Rangers and Unyaka Wakho Youth Foundation Advocates for Change had a fruitful discussion about ways to save food and the disadvantages of food wastage.

The day was called ‘Stop Food Waste Day’, but it did not stop with the theoretical classroom discussions.

World Disco Soup Day

The following day, World Disco Soup Day, was commemorated by young learners looking at practical ways of saving food.

The ever-resourceful Mrs Gamede approached two businesses for vegetable donations, which were used to prepare a hearty soup.

Health school nurse from Estcourt Provincial Hospital, Sister Ntokozo Gwala, joined in the festivities and even cooked the soup for the group.

“Thank you to the vegetable sponsors, Sister Gwala, as well as my Girl Guides, Brownies, Rangers and Unyaka Wakho Youth Foundation Advocates for Change members who are always willing to learn new skills,” said Mrs Gamede.
