Investing in our planet on World Earth Day

Environmental protection is a topic that everyone should have on their mind, just like the Girl Guides and Unyaka Wakho Youth Foundation Advocates for Change members.

To commemorate World Earth Day, which was celebrated on April 22 under the banner of ‘Invest in our Planet’, learners went about doing their bit to care for the environment.

The young learners gathered litter from surrounding areas and this was deposited into the Litter4Tokens kiosk at Riverdale Primary School.

By doing this, they not only rid the environment of harmful kinds of litter like plastic, but they also gather tokens for the litter they collect, which they can use to purchase items from the school.

Educator, Girl Guide leader and Unyaka Wakho Youth Foundation Advocates for Change founder Deborah Gamede is always coming up with innovative ideas to educate and create awareness among her young members.

“I agree that we cannot stop our children from engaging in social ills due to peer pressure, but we can minimise the chances of this happening by introducing various activities and projects in our schools and encouraging participation to keep them occupied with positive things. As the Ukhahlamba region Litter4Tokens director, I call on all schools that wish to engage their learners in an easy project that costs no money to contact me. This project keeps learners occupied while taking care of the environment and communities, as well as instilling the love of nature in them,” commented Mrs Gamede.
