Mrs Meyer said it was encouraging to see how many independent schools are currently using the programme.

St Dominics Newcastle’s Mrs Meyer and Mrs Gokul attended a NumberSense workshop in Shongweni on April 23.

Aiming at foundation and senior phase learners, the workshop focused on reasoning in mathematics as a sense-making, problem-solving activity. Mrs Meyer explained that learners were expected to develop a body of knowledge, which they could then apply in unfamiliar situations with understanding and reasoning.

She added it was encouraging to see how many independent schools are currently using the NumberSense programme.

Personally, these workshops enrich your own understanding and knowledge, so you can apply it in your class. The entire staff will therefore benefit, because we report back,” confirmed Mrs Meyer.

NumberSense is currently part of the St Dominics Newcastle curriculum, allowing learners to reason and draw conclusions.

The NumberSense programme equips our leaners with 21st Century skills,” concluded Mrs Meyer.
