Shootout the result of attempted CIT heist

A shootout between first responders and armed suspects led to the closure of multiple routes.

Four suspects have been killed and one more critically injured, after attempting to hijack a cash-in-transit vehicle on the R34 Utrecht Road last night (May 6).

Sources close to the scene stated that emergency personnel were informed of the attempted heist and quickly chased after the group of suspects.

Security companies, farming forums, CPF members, SAPS, Newcastle Traffic Services and other emergency services were involved in locating and capturing the suspects.

A shootout then broke out between first responders and the armed suspects, leading to the closure of the N11 and the R34 Utrecht road.

These roads remained closed for the remainder of the night while forensic investigations were conducted. Sources indicate the route are once again open for traffic.

Four firearms were recovered as well as two stolen vehicles.
