The sale of copper cable has often led to theft and endangering lives in the quest to obtain the metal for sale in a lucrative market.
One such suspected attempt was foiled by the Bergville Visible Policing Unit on May 6.
Responding to information that described a ‘suspicious vehicle on the R74’ during the early hours the morning, the officers planned to intercept the vehicle and its occupants.

When the bakkie was stopped, police uncovered copper wire and brackets.
They started to question the four occupants about the origin of the load.
“The occupants alleged that the copper was being transported to Gauteng. They were unable to account for where they got the metal from, nor could they produce any documentation proving their ownership of it,” commented police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan.
The four, aged between 21 and 39, were arrested.
“They will appear in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court on May 9. They face charges of possession of suspected stolen property. Their vehicle has since been impounded by police,” added W/O Khan.
