Municipality responds to pothole concerns –

Last week, the Newcastle Advertiser published an article about the reported decline in the state of Newcastle’s roads. The newspaper asked readers which roads they thought were in desperate need of repair, following last month’s torrential rains.

At the time of going to print, the municipality was yet to respond. However, a statement was released later in the week by the municipal Communications Unit.

Part of the statement reads as follows:

The municipality is concerned about the inconvenience caused by potholes on Newcastle’s roads as a result of the recent heavy rainfall. It also acknowledges the inconvenience caused to many road users as a result of the increasing number of potholes caused by those rains.”

The municipality acknowledged the inconvenience caused to many road users, as a result of the increasing number of potholes caused by the rainfall. It was further stated that Technical Services teams were on standby, once most areas were dry.

In the coming days, these teams will resume the process of resurfacing and resealing damaged roads.”

The municipality stated that when it rained, water infiltrated through cracks and weakened the soil beneath the roads. This process caused more cracking, which eventually leads to the formation of potholes.
