uThukela mayor tackles water issues

"Ezakheni, Acaciavale, Rose Park and Chisty Place use the river as their main raw water supply"

uThukela District Municipality Mayor Cllr Inkosi NB Shabalala has visited the eMbizeni Water Works, which supplies Ezakheni, Acaciavale, Rose Park and Chisty Place. The visit was together with Water & Sanitation Portfolio Committee chairperson Cllr MM Khoza, Cllr SV Shabalala and other councillors, together with the community.

According to uThukela’s reports, the recent floods affected the supply to the above-mentioned areas, leaving community members without running water.

According to the district mayor, he wanted community members to see for themselves the degree of damage the floods have caused to the water systems. uThukela says the plant was badly infiltrated by silt to an extent that its volume rose above water levels.

While interacting with community members, Mayor Shabalala shed some light on the reason why only the aforementioned areas experience interruptions whenever there are floods.

“Ezakheni, Acaciavale, Rose Park and Chisty Place use the river as their main raw water supply, as opposed to some other areas that get supplied from constructed dams,” said the mayor.

He continued that the construction company that is currently on-site was hired to rapidly get the systems back to working order.

“After this unfortunate incident of floods, we had estimated the turnaround time to be yesterday (Friday) if everything had worked out as planned. As we are constantly in contact with the contractor, a report was given to us yesterday afternoon that our expectations may not yield the anticipated results. As we are gathered here on-site, we can attest to the fact that there are a lot of developments since our last visit. We are hopeful that within a reasonable time, our main goal of getting water to the people will be fulfilled,” the mayor concluded.
