KwaZulu-Natal floods wash away cattle in Paulpietersburg

It is said that the water suddenly rose when the cattle were at the centre of the river, and nothing and no one could save the animals.

Over the past week, KwaZulu-Natal has been experiencing rainfall which has led to flooding in some parts of the province.

Paulpietersburg SAPS reported a ‘disaster’ that took place in Bivane River, related to the flooding. 12 cattle belonging to Induna Mnyandu of Natal Spar were swept away by the flooding river. It is said that the water suddenly rose when the cattle were at the centre of the river, and nothing and no one could save the animals.

Cattle, snakes, frogs, dogs, cats and donkeys were just some of the dead animals found in the province by the animal welfare organisation in the last few days.

Aside from cattle being washed away, over 400 people have lost their lives and infrastructure, establishments, businesses and houses have been completely destroyed. Durban is said to be the most affected city, and it has been reported on the news and social media that some people have not yet been found. Others have been left homeless and jobless.

People have stressed that KwaZulu-Natal was just starting to recover from the unrest that took place last year; now there are extreme floods. A hashtag is now making the rounds on social media, #PrayforKZN, which many people have been supporting.

Government, business people and individuals have been donating to those affected the most by the floods. President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Monday evening and commented that, ‘’There is still so much more that needs to be done to restore homes, lives and livelihoods, so let us all work together as a united and determined nation to recover and rebuild from this tragic disaster.’’
