Local wrestlers all set to conquer Africa champs

These two young athletes are the only KZN representatives (wrestlers) in the South African National Wrestling Team and are both members of the Northern Natal Rhino Club in Glencoe.

Morocco will host the Africa Continental Wrestling Championships in May this year. South Africa entered a strong team which will compete in Freestyle Wrestling and Greco Roman Wrestling.

Two local teams were chosen to represent the country at these prestigious championships. The well[1]known city of Casablanca will be the venue where Africa’s wrestling teams do battle. At least 16 African teams have entered. Egypt, Nigeria, Tunisia and South Africa are some of the early favourites.

Leonard Kruger will compete in the 74kg weight division – under 20 Freestyle. Dawie Botha will compete in the 71kg weight division – under 17 Greco Roman. These two young athletes are the only KZN representatives (wrestlers) in the South African National Wrestling Team and are both members of the Northern Natal Rhino Club in Glencoe.

They are hard at work preparing for this competition. Coach Steven Brown said his fighters are ready and not going to Morocco as spectators. He is expecting to bring medals home! To compete internationally in this sport, wrestling is a costly affair and the South African team members are responsible for their own funding. The estimated cost of their participation at this event is about R40,000 per wrestler. The Northern Natal Wrestling Club is busy with a fund-raising initiative to help these promising young sports stars achieve their dreams. “We will have to lean hard on the local community for support, so please be patient with our efforts and consider donating to this worthy cause,” says the club.
