A 2-year-old found roaming alone on extremely busy main road

Luckily, we stopped the cars for the boy to move away from the road and the grandfather works near the main road. We would like the Department of Social Services to intervene."

A call has been made for the Department of Social Services to intervene after a two-year-old boy was found roaming one of the main roads near the Kwabhanya area last week Thursday. General Mgoza from the Traffic Department alerted the Vryheid Herald about the little boy and his plight..

The toddler was found by Community Work Programme (CWP) participants along the road at about 07:00 in the morning. The boy is said to be living with his 14-year-old mother, a cousin who babysits him, and the grandmother.

The grandmother was allegedly at work when the boy was found wandering around, while the person in charge of babysitting was inside the house sleeping. The babysitter commented that, ‘’I thought the little boy had left with an uncle in his car, because the uncle came by the house in the morning and when he left, the boy followed him. I did not think he was playing outside, I thought they both left, because he (the uncle) normally takes him.”

The CWP supervisor stressed that this is not the first time the little boy has been seen on this main road. “About four times now, the CWP participants have told me about this boy. Luckily, we stopped the cars for the boy to move away from the road and the grandfather works near the main road. We would like the Department of Social Services to intervene.”

Officials from the Department of Social Services are attending to the matter. Phumzile Manqele from the department concluded that they will intervene in the boy’s situation and living conditions at home. If they find that there is a need, they might move the boy to the children’s home.
