Wet weather dampens soccer action

The wet weather was a disappointment for the organisers as they anticipated a full weekend of soccer action

Dozens of people converged at the Wembezi Stadium to witness the annual Meester Soccer Tournament that was played amid inclement weather on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (April 15, 16 and 17).

Teams from Estcourt and surrounding areas were rearing to go in this popular tournament, which has a R30 000 cash prize up for grabs for the winners.

On Friday, the stadium was packed with spectators, cheering on their favourite teams and enjoying the warm weather.

With incessant and steady rainfall on Saturday and Sunday, only four matches were played on Sunday.

The wet weather was a disappointment for the organisers as they anticipated a full weekend of soccer action.

During the first semi-final, two Mabhalonini  teams Gqom Gang FC and Destroyer United went head-to-head.

 

Destroyer United are the winners of the Meester Soccer Tournament.

Destroyer United was victorious with the final score 1-0. The second semi-final was between Private Number FC and Lacoste FC, both teams  from Mooi River.

Private Number FC outplayed their opposition and won the match 2-0.

A friendly game between Phumlani Mkhize 11 and Mc Tshatha 11 was played, which was organised by Ayanda Mkhize from Amazulu FC.

The match was won by Mc Tshatha 11 with the final score being 2-0. The highlight of the day was the final, which was contested by Destroyer United and Private Number FC.

It was an action-packed match that had the spectators on the edge of their sets. After the allotted time, Destroyer United emerged at the Meester Soccer Tournament champions after winning the final 2-1.

The team bagged the cash prize of R30 000 and Private Number FC won R20 000. Soccer kits were won by Lacoste and Gqom Gang.

“We want to thank Mr Mthokozisi Sibisi for sponsoring the Meester Soccer Tournament and the community of Wembezi for coming out in their numbers to attend our tournament,” said  tournament organisers Sizwe Bhoboza Zungu and Bonga Mnguni.
