Local model takes to national catwalk

Nonjabulo is also the current Miss Wembezi second princess, a title she holds dear as it was her debut pageant

Mental health has become a frank global conversation, more especially after a string of suicides both in the national and international entertainment industry.

Taking a stand to be part of the generation that confronts, instead of dismisses mental health, is Estcourt lass Nonjabulo Thandiswa Linda.

Before we delve into  Nonjabulo’s story, you should know that the 20-year-old was born in Estcourt and attended New Canaan Primary School.

She later relocated to Newcastle and is currently studying at the University of Western Cape where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Laws.

Nonjabulo is also the current Miss Wembezi second princess, a title she holds dear as it was her debut pageant.

With a combination of beauty and brains, Nonjabulo decided to ‘give it a shot’ when she saw a poster for the Miss Township South Africa.

This pageant, like its entrants, differs from the traditional pageant, as Nonjabulo explains.

“Miss Township South Africa is not only about beauty but it is also about empowering every woman out there. It does not matter whether you have a child or tattoos; they work about enhancing inner beauty.”

What also attracted Nonjabulo to enter the competition was to promote mental health awareness.

“I saw that the competition will help me to grow and nourish the youngsters suffering from mental health issues. Productive workshops are held weekly to accommodate everyone and to teach about current and varied topics and help those who are in need of healing due to their pasts,” she explains.

Nonjabulo is anxiously waiting for the pageant, which will take place in Pretoria later this year.

“Right now I’m still finishing the duties I have to do as a semi-finalist in order to secure my space as a finalist,” she said.

Her mother and grandmother, who she describes as her ‘biggest supporters’ will attend and cheer her on.
