Factory along Helpmekaar Road closed by protesters

They are demanding that more local people should be employed

A factory in Helpmekaar Road was closed by protesters this morning (April 14).

However, after meeting with management, community leader Nathi Mthethwa has confirmed that the protest has been halted. “Factory management has asked that we have another meeting next week with all stakeholders to find solutions to the demands that were put forward. It is for this reason that we stopped the protest for now,” said Mthethwa.

The factory was at a standstill after being closed by the protesters, who are all community members. Workers and delivery vehicles were denied access to the premises.

According to the protesters, they submitted a memorandum of demands to factory management last Monday (April 4), with a seven-day deadline period in which to respond.

The deadline was thus Tuesday this week (April 12), but no response has been received.

The community’s demands include that the factory should employ people from Ladysmith.

Secondly, the factory must help with community development and youth activities in Steadville, including the sponsoring of local non-profit organisations.
