Ladysmith Floods: Flooding in the CBD

The low lying areas in the CBD have been closed off by Public Safety officials.

Ladysmith is flooding once again for the third time this year. Over the weekend Ladysmith and the catchment area saw a considerable amount of rainfall.

The CBD began flooding just after 7 am this morning with river water back flowing into low-lying areas of the CBD as one-way storm water valves once again fail to close. Public Safety officers closed some of Lyell Street in the CBD as parts of it are completely underwater.

The water level is still rising.

Motorists have been warned  to steer clear and use alternate routes.

According to a media release by the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Sipho Hlomuka the South African Weather Service has warned that heavy rains will continue to fall this evening.

Local Disaster management teams have responded to the flooding in town and will continue to monitor high risk areas.
