‘God bless South Africa’ by Hlalalisani Shoba

At times we don’t need different prayers when praying for our country, for we have the national anthem we can use anytime to bring a state of peace, calmness, contentment, and quietness to South Africa.

Halalisani Shoba

We live in a democratic country, with rights and freedom to act and express ourselves freely as long as it does not harm or violate the freedom and rights of other people. I had time to thoroughly study our national anthem, line by line for the first time. Yes, I’m familiar with it as we normally sing the anthem when necessary but this time around I went through it, word by word. What a beautiful ‘prayer’ we have as the national anthem of South Africa.

“Nkosi Sikelel’Africa (God Bless Africa),

Yizwa imithandazo yethu (Hear our prayers),

Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso, (God protect our nation),

O fedise dintwa le matshwenyeho, (End all wars and tribulations),

Oor ons ewige gebergtes, (Over our everlasting mountains)

And united we shall stand”.

Wow! After going through these lines, word by word which I selectively picked from each stanza of the national anthem, I reached the conclusion that indeed our country was meant to be a rainbow nation. I reached the conclusion that at times we don’t need different prayers when praying for our country, for we have the national anthem we can use anytime to bring a state of peace, calmness, contentment, and quietness to South Africa.

Look around you, what is happening? Too much is happening around where we are. Crime, corruption, violence, and poverty to mention a few. After everything being said and done with no light at the end of the tunnel, with no sign of a rainbow reflecting over our country, whom do we turn our heads to? Because we are a rainbow nation with different belief systems and everything, my suggestion is that, let us turn our heads to the same God who is portrayed in words by our national anthem.

South Africa let us turn to God. I believe God is still willing to bless our country. It is only God who can give the best protection, and end-all tribulations in our nation. Over our everlasting mountains, united we shall stand but divided the enemy of peace and quietness will defeat us.
