Over 9000 arrests for various crimes in KZN

Recoveries included drugs, counterfeit goods, cigarettes, guns and livestock

During the month of March, police arrested 9169 suspects for various crimes around KwaZulu-Natal.

The operations were conducted in all 11 districts. 

Police officers embarked on numerous ops aimed at reducing high levels of crime in targeted areas that had specific crime threats.

The arrests were as follows: 198 suspects were arrested for murder, 157 for attempted murder, 291 for robbery, 259 for rape, 289 for burglary, 1568 for drug-related crimes, and 2033 for assault.

Large quantities of drugs such as heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, crystal meth and dagga were seized. Recoveries also included counterfeit goods and cigarettes.

Police recovered 205 stolen vehicles. A further 43 vehicles were seized after they were used in the commission of crimes.

In addition, police seized 282 firearms, as well as livestock.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, commended the officers on their commitment to root out crime in KZN.

“These results are an indication that criminality will not be tolerated and ordinary citizens are working with police to clean up their neighbourhoods,” said Mkhwanazi.
