Accident hot-spot requires urgent attention

Another worrying factor is the safety of pedestrians, animals and cyclists who frequent this road

The intersection of Brokensha and Brewitt roads is hazardous to say the least.

This is the opinion of Brewitt Road resident Nico Smit, who says that collisions in this area are fairly common.

The most recent crash took place on March 19, just metres away from his home.

Smit said he heard a vehicle driving past at very high speed, followed seconds later by a loud bang.

When he went outside to see what the commotion was all about, he saw a car in the gutter adjacent to the pavement and a taxi had smashed into a wall at a nearby home.

Accident hot-spot

Thankfully, no one was injured. However, according to Smit, this is another indicator that speed-calming devices are essential to prevent further collisions along this road.

“There have been about six accidents during the past six years. My properties, as well as some of my neighbours’, have often been damaged,” he said.

Another worrying factor is the safety of pedestrians, animals and cyclists who frequent this road.

“The municipality must do something. There should be a four-way stop or even speed bumps, because no one slows down at the stop signs that are currently at the intersection,” Smit elaborated.

He hopes that this public request via the newspaper will reach the correct channels and that action is taken to prevent possible fatalities in the future.
