Model Aircraft Club takes to the Newcastle sky:

Johannesburg and Durban members of the Model Aircraft Club met at the Newcastle airport on March 19 to capitalise on the great facilities and favourable weather.

The club gathers twice a year in Newcastle, and is looking forward to opening to spectators again.

Neville Wright, who was among the pilots from Johannesburg, said there were about 12 club members flying over the weekend.

“The model aircraft we have here today are run on gas turbine motors, the same as a full size 747. Some are running on paraffin and others on diesel, but all are using some sort of jet fuel,” said Wright.

According to Wright, members of the club use opportunities such as the one presented over the weekend, not just to fly socially, but also to practice the sequence of technical manoeuvres required in national and even international competitions.

Wright has been flying for the past 55 years.

He has participated in the World Radio Control Championships hosted in Virginia, USA. He says he picked up the interest in flying from his father as a youngster.
