Dundee cemetery finally gets clean-up after heavy rainfall

"If a community member can't locate where they buried their loved ones, they must come to our offices. We are always there to assist them," said Zakhele Mndaweni.

The recent rains made the situation worse at the Dundee cemetery in Bulwar Street.
Sbongile Kubheka contacted the Courier office in recent weeks to complain about the overgrown grass and poor maintenance at the cemetery.
“The grass is long and we could not locate our child’s grave. We want to erect a tombstone,” she told the Courier.
The cemetery has since received a much-needed major clean-up after the recent rains.
Zakhele Mndaweni, manager of Environmental & Waste Services at the municipality, explained that the persistent summer rains have impacted greatly on the condition of the cemetery.

“We always have this problem, especially around summertime.”
He cited that the department had noted the concerns of the community and were well aware of the overgrown grass and high weeds.
“As a department, we are working around the clock to ensure that the graveyards are always clean and well maintained.

“We also have a plan in place to deal with the cutting of the grass in the cemetery.”
Mdaweni concluded that the community is welcome to come and see them at the municipality should they have any concerns or if they can’t find their loved one’s grave.
He explained that,
“We have a map and we work with grave numbers.
“If a community member can’t locate where they buried their loved ones, they must come to our offices. We are always there to assist them.”
