Sewage spill continues to contaminate Bushman’s River

The sewage leak was reported to the water service provider more than two years ago

It’s been more than a month since uThukela District Municipality promised action to prevent a sewage leak flowing into the Bushman’s River.

The sewage leak was reported to the water service provider more than two years ago when residents in the vicinity of Paradise noticed the spray of sewage along the pipe running across the river.

No action was taken and a month ago, a resident reported that the matter had worsened.

The heavy rains had caused the sewage pipe to break, thus causing effluent to pour into the river, which is the main source of water for domestic purposes for thousands of people living downstream.

This prompts concerns about high levels of contamination.

When uThukela was consulted about the sewage spill in February, communications manager Jabulani Mkhonza said that the district municipality is ‘trying to fix the damage and also find a permanent solution’.

“As a way forward, we want to re-route the sewer line into a user-friendly and safer area, and are currently doing the cost estimate for the refurbishment project. Because of the ‘uneasiness’ of the terrain, we will need about two weeks to work on it,” he added.

However, there have been no repairs done on the pipe as yet.

The district municipality was again consulted about the feedback, but no response was given.
