ESTCOURT KZN: Irregular maintenance sees cemetery sliding into rack and ruin

Accessing a loved one’s grave site at the Keate Street cemetery is tricky to say the least

The state and safety of the cemeteries in Estcourt has been in the spotlight many times before.

In particular, the Keate Street cemetery is infamous for robberies, loitering and its unkempt condition.

In the past, locals took it upon themselves or joined forces with others to cut the waist-high grass and clean up the mess that is left from meals, drinking and lewd activities.

Accessing a loved one’s grave site at the Keate Street cemetery is tricky to say the least.

Some areas are completely shrouded in long grass, while other areas are fairly accessible.

When asked about the maintenance plan at local cemeteries, Municipal Manager Patrick Mkhize gave a curt answer: “The Department of Community Services will be focusing on cemeteries next; we have a programme.”

He did not elaborate on the maintenance plan nor the frequency with which it is carried out.
