‘Suikerbekkie’ celebrates 10 years of success

All proceeds from both the coffee shop and the charity shop go towards the old age home

Ten years ago, the idea of a small shop called ‘Suikerbekkie’ that would provide basic grocery items to senior citizens at the Jubileum SAVF Old Age Home was born. It then spiralled into a coffee shop where young and old can socialise and enjoy a piece of cake with their coffee or tea. ‘Suikerbekkie’ turned 10 years old on Friday and SAVF manager Marietjie Cronje says the idea couldn’t have been more successful than it is now. This initiative also allows for some of the residents to provide baked goods to the coffee shop and in turn, the bakers get paid a percentage. Hettie Franken (93) is one of the first residents who baked a specialised cheesecake for the shop and up until today, this is still a firm favourite among visitors. She has been living at Jubileum for the past 30 years. Even though Hettie doesn’t make it herself anymore, she has taught Angel in the kitchen to perfect the art. The shop is affordable and open to the public from 09:30 until 15:30 from Monday to Friday. The venue is also available for small functions. Contact Marietjie on 034 982 2220/1 for bookings. Donations are also welcome.

Not only does the old age home offer a coffee shop, but Tokkie Muller also runs a charity shop called ‘Kom Loerie Bitjie’ on the premises. The charity shop provides clothes to some of the needy residents, as well as to the workers who love to ‘shop’. All proceeds from both the coffee shop and the charity shop go towards the old age home. Any donations in the form of unwanted goods are welcome. Tokkie can be contacted on 083 244 3473.

Marietjie thanks the community for their ongoing support. She invites everyone to visit ‘Suikerbekkie’ and taste their signature dish, which is also the best cheesecake in town… Hettie’s Cheesecake!
