Learners make the most of academics and sport

Landbou learners are making the most of this term: academically, practically and on the sports field.

Landbou learners are making the most of this term: academically, practically and on the sports field. Last weekend, the Grade 12 pupils attended an overnight Trigonometry-Focused Mathematics Workshop held at Vryheid High School. This took place from 18:00 until 06:00, with a brief break from 23:30 to 00:00, and was attended by learners from Vryheid Landbou, Vryheid High School, KwaBanya and Vryheid Comprehensive. The children were divided into two classes, according to their Maths knowledge, and in order to encourage new friendships, they were all seated next to a stranger. After a fun and informative class, the learners wrote a test at 04:00 to put their new knowledge to the test. Another class is scheduled to take place in the near future. Many thanks to all involved, especially Vryheid High School for hosting and the fantastic teachers (Mr Buthelezi, Mr Khumalo, Mr Mtshali and Mr Mkwanazi).

The Zululand Girls’ Hockey Trials took place on Tuesday. Congratulations to Asanda Nxumalo (Grade 10) who was chosen for the U/16 team. The KZN Inland District Trials will take place on March 13 at St Anne’s Diocesan College in Hilton. Good luck to all the girls. The school is now in safe hands after farm manager Njabulo Zulu and three workers (Mlungisi Zulu, Sfundo Gumede and Siphowokuhle Langa) completed basic fire-fighting training at FPA (Fire Protection Agency) on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Grade 12 Agricultural Technology class had the opportunity to work with a variety of equipment in the workshop this past week. They are the first AgriTech class to get their own equipment, including grinders and welders. Mr Sonnekus started with the importance of always wearing full PPE (helmets, gloves, Google, etc) while working with the equipment. After that, the learners cut thin strips of metal with their grinders and worked with the welder machine to weld a straight line and practice the different welding techniques. Thank you to Dehan Sonnekus for offering such a fascinating and insightful class!

Congratulations to all learners who were chosen for the 2022 Landbou school choir. We look forward to hearing your melodious voices! Applications for 2023 are now open, as from March 1 until August 30.

Application forms are available on our website – www.vryheidlandbou.co.za – or at the office, from Monday to Friday during office hours.
