ESTCOURT KZN: MM’s suspension lifted pending investigation

While the suspension has been lifted, the investigation has been handed over to the Municipal Public Accounts Committee

During a special council meeting held on February 28, Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality councillors took a resolution to lift the suspension of the municipal manager (MM), Patrick Mkhize.

A decision to suspend the MM was taken on February 9 after alleged irregularities in relation to the Mavela Sports Field in KwaDlamini, Ntabamhlophe, was picked up by the Infrastructure Portfolio Committee.

This prompted an investigation and the MM’s subsequent suspension.

While the suspension has been lifted, the investigation has been handed over to the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC).

Chairman Ugan Chetty confirmed this and said that one of the main roles of MPAC was to be accountable to the community about how money is spent.

The committee is set to sit for a meeting on March 15, where this matter will be discussed.

“We will try to establish the percentage of work done and how much was paid for. We will also discuss a site visit to see the work on the ground,” said Chetty.

He added that the committee may also deliberate on whether to make use of a panel of external investigators who are on the municipality’s database.

When asked about the estimated time-frame of the investigation, Chetty said this will be decided by the committee at its meeting next week.
