Political parties work together

''children are children and they must be helped without looking at any colour or political party.''

Two different political parties conducted a community project on Saturday in eBhekuzulu old location. The project was to paint a netball court through a donation from the Vryheid Front Plus. Community members came out in numbers to help with the painting of the court. The netball players who are used to playing there also volunteered and were so excited about the whole thing. Siyanqoba Sibiya, an ActionSA member and also one of the people behind this project, explained that, “In the Ghetto area, I saw young people who are passionate and play netball, but did not have the right resources. So I approached different people about the issue, one of them being Ntokozo, who is in charge of netball in this area. He outlined the challenges they face and that’s when I approached Mr Erasmus, whom I learned is from a political party called the Vryheid Front Plus. I gave him the challenge to work with us, since you know there is a stigma about the Vryheid Front Plus. I said to him:Mr Erasmus, people say you are the racist opposition, so now I want to give you the chance to prove yourself’. He then started donating netball T-shirts, balls and other things. When I met him, Mr Erasmus said that children are children and they must be helped without looking at any colour or political party.”

Mr Erasmus commented that the grand total for the paint was R12,000 and he approached a man based in Durban to assist in this regard. Community members from Stilwater and Zaailaagte also donated money for brushes and other items. Sizwe Qwabe, an assistant coach who was present at the court during the project, said they feel very happy and grateful, since they had challenges with ground lines that are unclear.

The whole aim of this project was to change the perception that society has about politics and that politicians do not work together. Also, instead of protesting, people can come up with other means to fight for service delivery. Lastly, there will be more community projects in the future, including a netball court that will be built from scratch. ALSO READ:
