Halalisani Shoba says ‘you’ll never walk alone’

“When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high and don’t be afraid of the dark. At the end of a storm, there’s a golden sky and the sweet silver song of the lark.

Halalisani Shoba

I don’t know how many times I have emphasized the importance of kindness in my previous columns. I don’t know how often I encourage myself to show kindness and love in every situation. At times I fail but trust me, I do try my best to demonstrate love and kindness. What really happened to kindness? Who said we must stop taking care of each other? Once again I will ask, what happened to UBUNTU? We are seriously losing it and on top of that, we don’t care. A lot has happened in the past few days, but there are specific incidents that drew my attention. Every time such incidents occur, a part of me wishes I can just drill a hole and allow the soil to swallow me. I know and you also know these incidents, they occur each and every day, just that it’s not all of them that gets the media attention.

Together we must unite to fight against the evil acts of Gender-Based Violence. I don’t care how many times you will read about it, where I’m emphasizing the importance of fighting against GBV, but I won’t stop writing about it. Every human being deserves to live in a space that is free from acts of abuse and violence. Let us do everything, I mean EVERYTHING to fight against Gender-Based Violence. The acts of GBV are inhuman and there’s no way we can tolerate them. I hope justice will prevail always against cruel people.

In one of my columns, previously, I wrote about the subject of mental illness. It was so unfortunate that I wrote that column at the time when one of the influential public figures had decided to end his life. Again it is unfortunate that last week, my social media space was flooded with the news of another public figure who decided to end his life. As much as I’m not a psychologist but it is clear that, it all goes back to mental illness. We are all going through something. We can deny it all the way we like, but we all have invisible demons we are dealing with. Talking about demons, I just remembered this advert, where this person would be seen with a monkey on his shoulders but as soon as he grabs a piece of chicken, the monkey gets to be lifted off his shoulders. Which means his cravings were nothing but a monkey on his shoulders. I’m trying to say, as much as we all face challenges and obstacles but at some point, we need to get the monkey off our shoulders. Let us all absorb the culture of talking instead of trying to deal with issues on our own.

I understand, we all try to deal with our pain and sufferings in different ways. There is nothing wrong with that but in doing so let us be encouraged to invite God always into our lives. I know we all have different belief systems but in order to conquer everything we do, we need that special divine intervention. We need a miracle that will cause goodness in our lives and stop all bad things from happening. As much as we can never dodge natural sufferings and pain in our lifetime, we can always walk away from people who come into our lives with the aim of causing suffering and pain.

Last week I decided to take a break from social media platforms because I couldn’t understand why people are inhuman, evil, and heartless. This thing of freedom of speech has somehow made people forget the importance of UBUNTU. Who are you to judge? Who am I to judge? It is fine you can question the motive but no one has the right to judge and act holy. Let us take care of one another for we need one another. Alone you will never be able to do it, alone I won’t be able to do it. “When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high and don’t be afraid of the dark. At the end of a storm, there’s a golden sky and the sweet silver song of the lark. Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart and you’ll never walk alone”
