Officers recover R50,000 worth of copper

5 suspects were arrested

Police recovered stolen copper and made five arrests after a recent joint operation.

Winterton detectives, Ladysmith Dog Unit (K9) officers and wardens from a security company partnered to carry out the operation.

Information was sourced that the men had tampered with infrastructure and they needed a vehicle to transport copper to Gauteng. A ‘civilian vehicle’ was arranged by police and officers went undercover, pretending to be the owner and driver of the vehicle.

They met the men in Khetani Township in Winterton and were directed to the Chieveley area of Colenso.

Once there, bags of copper wire were loaded into the vehicle. The officers and the five suspects then travelled towards the N3…

The team of law enforcement officers set up a roadblock and stopped the vehicle at the Colenso/Bergville off-ramp. All five suspects were arrested.
