Awards ceremony for schools in Zululand District

The district mayor mentioned that every school with a 100% pass rate in 2021 in the district will receive R10,000 for the school's needs.

The Mayoral Bursary & Excellence Awards were held on Tuesday last week at James Nxumalo High School.

The mayor of Zululand District Municipality, Cllr Thulasizwe Buthelezi, recognised different schools and learners who performed exceptionally well in the ‘Class of 2021’. The district mayor mentioned that every school with a 100% pass rate in 2021 in the district will receive R10,000 for the school’s needs.

The top learners, who have been accepted into various higher education institutions around the country, were represented by their parents, who expressed joy by ululating and dancing. Each learner received a tablet device (gadget), sponsored by MTN, and the top five learners will receive free data for the next 18 months.

Zululand District Municipality also rewarded three learners among the top performers with laptop notebook devices.

“Every school that received 100% will walk away with R10,000. The principals will decide how they want to use this money to aid their children’s education. Between now and December, together with MTN, we will aim to help at least 100 schools in the Zululand area that do not have connectivity so that every learner will have access to the internet,” said the mayor.

He also encouraged current matric learners who attended the ceremony to emulate the ‘Class of 2021’ that achieved excellent results and focused on their studies amid trying circumstances.

The awards ceremony was part of Zululand District Municipality’s special focus on youth development, education and skilling. The municipality has spent R1 million so that 100 learners can receive a R10,000 registration fee, paid directly to the institution of their choice.
