R400-million ‘mini’ re-line for blast furnace –

The blast furnace at the ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) Newcastle Works will receive a ‘mini’ re-line in the second quarter of this year. A two-month planned stop is expected to take place at the end of April.

During the steel giant’s annual results presentation for the 2021 financial year recently, CEO, Kobus Verster said AMSA would aim to keep the furnace off for the shortest time possible to reduce the effect on stock and production.

“Hopefully, by stopping for a shorter period, we won’t expose the furnace to any risk,” commented Verster.

The mini re-line, with its cost estimated at R400-million, should see the Newcastle blast furnace shut down for 16 hours a week.

Verster hopes this will give AMSA time to build up a buffer stock for the remainder of 2022.

He added the re-line was delayed to ensure adequately skilled staff would be available.

We want to avoid any resulting incidents when the blast furnace cools down…” concluded Verster.
