An awards ceremony to honour last year’s top five matric students at KwaNotshelwa High School was held at the Coronation Community Hall on Thursday. School principal Mr MM Ndebele, deputy principal Mr TW Ncube, the school management team, School Governing Body (SGB), Ward 6 Councillor Mr Bheki Mdlalose and this year’s Grade 12 learners were present to congratulate the top achievers of 2021. It was an event to present awards to the top five out of 302 learners who wrote the 2021 NSC final examination. They are:

1. Ndumiso Khumalo from the Hlobane area, who obtained eight A’s in IsiZulu Home Language, English First Additional Language, Life Orientation, Mathematical Literacy, Economics, Business Studies, Tourism and History. 2. Noxolo Masondo from the Shoba area, who obtained seven A’s in IsiZulu Home Language, English First Additional Language, Life Orientation, Mathematical Literacy, Business Studies, Tourism and History. 3. Amanda Masondo from the Coronation area, who obtained five A’s in IsiZulu Home Language, English First Additional Language, Life Orientation, Business Studies and Tourism. 4. Khethukuthula Zulu from the Mbilane area, who obtained three A’s in English First Additional Language, Accounting and Mathematics. 5. Ntethelelo Dlamini from the Coronation area, who obtained three A’s in IsiZulu Home Language, English First Additional Language and Life Sciences.

The above learners were accompanied by their parents, except Ntethelelo Dlamini. He was not present, but a parent was present in his absence.

The Master of Ceremonies on the day was Miss Hlabisa. Mr Khumalo (SGB chairperson) opened the event with a prayer before welcoming the top achievers, parents, educators, SMT and ‘Class of 2022’. The school principal congratulated the awardees on their remarkable results, as well as the dedication of the KwaNotshelwa High School educators and parents. “The educators sacrificed their own time for the future of the black child. They attended morning classes, afternoon classes, holiday classes and camps, etc,” said the principal, who then motivated the ‘Class of 2022’ to study hard in order to pass with flying colours as well.

Mr Ndebele conveyed gratitude to the steering committee for organising the massive event in such a short period of time. The committee was Mrs PN Mchunu, Mrs T Mkhwanazi, Mrs NS Masango, Miss LP Xulu and Mr ZS Xulu. Mr Ndebele then summarised the 2021 matric results: KwaNotshelwa High School obtained a 65,4% pass rate • Number of Bachelor’s passes – 83 • Number of Diplomas – 80 • Number of Higher Certificates – 28 • Total number of passes – 191 On behalf of the SMT and SGB (teacher component), Mr. BC Masango (Head of Department) also congratulated the top five achievers and wished them all the best in their future endeavours. He motivated the ‘Class of 2022’ to study hard; manage their time by setting up a personal study timetable; and set short, medium and long-term goals in order for them to track their performance and progress. He furthermore encouraged the learners to contact Mr Zakhele Xulu from the ZAKHELE FOUNDATION (who is fortunately also an educator at KwaNotshelwa High School and an SGB member) for online applications for tertiary education. Lastly, he quoted Nelson Mandela by saying: “Education is the great engine of personal development.”

Mr Bheki Mdlalose (ward councillor) also applauded the top five achievers and wished them all the best. He also motivated the ‘Class of 2022’ to have passion, work hard and be dedicated. He mentioned the Zululand Bursary application and as a councillor, he said he is pleased to lead these future learners and promised to work closely with the school to help them.
